Is there a Nonviolent Word for “Confrontation?”

“With a confrontation, an opposition is happening—and the beautiful thing that can happen is a confrontation is the resolution.” -George Condo, http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/18/t-magazine/art/george-condo-picasso-matisse-museum-berggruen.html

The “beautiful thing” in the resolution of opposites is the awareness that both must exist or face mutual extinction. However, is there a word that suggests nonviolence rather than the violence “confrontation” evokes?
