{"id":1474,"date":"2021-07-19T11:40:37","date_gmt":"2021-07-19T15:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2024-07-26T12:14:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T16:14:26","slug":"lament-is-a-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/lament-is-a-dream\/","title":{"rendered":"Insight into Lament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As I woke up, too soon I might add, I had the idea that my monodrama <em>Lament<\/em> is a dream; and why not. The initial idea I had for this work was for it to be a monodrama using the Thomas poem. The setting would be a 52nd street jazz club in Manhattan. I was imagining the type of jazz of the 1950s to 1960. During this incredible decade (for both jazz and new music), personalities, styles, and ideas were changing rapidly and I wanted to be able to pick and choose influences unencumbered by history. My guiding light was the question, &#8220;What if&#8230;?&#8221; The music freely references the jazz experience one might have had in the clubs of that time. It is the non-historical part, however, that allows for the work to be a dream\u2014it&#8217;s outside of time. That <em>Lament<\/em> takes place in a dream explains much of its expression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/>The setting would be <span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">in a fictitious 52nd street jazz <\/span><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">club in Manhattan.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/john-coltrane-with-shadow-wilson-thelonious-monk-and-ahmed-abdul-malik-the-five-spot-new-york-ny-1957-don-schlitten-300x240.jpeg\" alt=\"Lament\" class=\"wp-image-1559 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/john-coltrane-with-shadow-wilson-thelonious-monk-and-ahmed-abdul-malik-the-five-spot-new-york-ny-1957-don-schlitten-300x240.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/john-coltrane-with-shadow-wilson-thelonious-monk-and-ahmed-abdul-malik-the-five-spot-new-york-ny-1957-don-schlitten-1024x820.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/john-coltrane-with-shadow-wilson-thelonious-monk-and-ahmed-abdul-malik-the-five-spot-new-york-ny-1957-don-schlitten-768x615.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.markgustavson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/john-coltrane-with-shadow-wilson-thelonious-monk-and-ahmed-abdul-malik-the-five-spot-new-york-ny-1957-don-schlitten.jpeg 1044w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One idea I have struggled with is I haven&#8217;t accepted Thomas&#8217;s title. I have always viewed the final stanza of the poem as not a bad, sad or regrettable place to be. Rather, it is a mature and spiritual acceptance of the life cycle.  I get to see the time arc at a deeper level, one that Thomas could not have imagined. Yet the whole episode is a dream and allows for multiple interpretations. My interpretation doesn&#8217;t take anything away from the poem but it does make it self-accepting.
