Brooklyn-born clarinetist-composer Mark<\/em>
\n Gustavson offers a collection of his chamber<\/em>
\n music from the late 1980s through the late<\/em>
\n 1990s, recorded here with three different New<\/em>
\n York groups over a span of 20 years. Inspired<\/em>
\n by the improvisation aesthetic in jazz and<\/em>
\n Southeast Asian music, Gustavson strives for<\/em>
\n an atmosphere of seemingly spontaneous<\/em>
\n sound and rhythm even in very strict notation.<\/em>
\n The program includes <\/em>Dissolving Images
\n (1986) for solo piano; <\/em>Jag (1991) for a sextet of<\/em>
\n violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trombone, and<\/em>
\n piano; a full-length four-movement\u00a0<\/em>
\nQuintet (1993); <\/em>Trickster (1997) for unaccompanied<\/em>
\n clarinet; and <\/em>A Fool\u2019s Journey (1999), a<\/em>
\n two-movement quasi-programmatic sextet for<\/em>
\n violin, cello, flute, clarinet, piano, and percussion.<\/em><\/p>\n

New York City clarinetist and sound engineer<\/em>
\n Edward Gilmore leads string quartet Con-<\/em>
\n Tempo in the clarinet <\/em>Quintet and stands<\/em>
\n alone in <\/em>Trickster. Australian-born avant-garde<\/em>
\n pianist Lisa Moore opens the recital with <\/em>Dissolving
\nImages. The group Either\/Or performs<\/em>
\nJag, and the musicians of Parnassus play their<\/em>
\n own commission,<\/em> A Fool\u2019s Journey.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gustavson\u2019s music fuses modernist gestures<\/em>
\n with an Expressionist aesthetic. Each<\/em>
\n score simmers with emotional vigor, from nervous<\/em>
\n quiet murmurs to sudden violent outbursts.<\/em>
\n The often abstract harmonic language,<\/em>
\n though, requires a high level of professionalism<\/em>
\n to transcend. While all the performers<\/em>
\n bring enthusiasm and commitment, the level<\/em>
\n of sonic refinement varies greatly. Some players<\/em>
\n have complete control of their craft, others<\/em>
\n not so much, and so appreciation of Gustavson\u2019s<\/em>
\n efforts can be difficult.<\/em><\/p>\n

Clarinetists interested in the quintet and<\/em>
\n the unaccompanied <\/em>Trickster, for example, will<\/em>
\n welcome Gilmore\u2019s expressive vision but may<\/em>
\n be turned off by his much too free-blowing<\/em>
\n set-up and his persistently spread tone. At the<\/em>
\n same time, though, pianists who check out<\/em>
\nDissolving Images will be impressed by<\/em>
\n Moore\u2019s exquisite touch, riveting musicianship,<\/em>
\n and thorough command of the keyboard.<\/em>
